As a chiropractor, I see firsthand the power of the mind-body connection. I have helped many people improve their health by addressing the underlying emotional and mental factors that were contributing to their physical symptoms, and am often asked about the mind-body connection. What is it? How does it work? And why is it important?

What is the Mental Impulse?

The mind-body connection is the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors can have a direct impact on our physical health. This is supported by a growing body of research that has shown that stress, anxiety, and depression can contribute to a variety of physical health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and chronic pain.

In chiropractics, we believe that the mind-body connection is even more fundamental. We believe that the nerve system is the body’s communication system, and that it is essential for maintaining health and well-being. This ‘Mental Impulse’ originates in the brain and travels through the spinal cord. It branches out to every cell, tissue, and organ in the body, and is considered to be the life force that animates and sustains our physical and mental well-being.

Through my practice, I have come to the understanding that the mind and body are not separate entities, but rather two parts of a whole. I recognize the mental impulse as the communication signal between the brain and the rest of the body. It carries vital information, instructions, and healing power to ensure proper function and coordination of all bodily systems. When the mental impulse is unimpeded and flowing freely, it allows the body’s innate intelligence to express itself fully, promoting optimal health and well-being.

However, when the mental impulse is disrupted through misalignment or dysfunction in the spinal joints, it can lead to a variety of physical and emotional symptoms, resulting in diminished function and potential health problems. Chiropractic adjustments aim to correct interferences to the mental impulses, restore proper alignment, and facilitate the uninterrupted transmission of the mental impulse throughout the nervous system.

One of the most common ways that the nervous system can be temporarily disrupted is through subluxation.

Subluxation: Misalignments of the Spine

A subluxation is a misalignment of the spine that puts pressure on the spinal nerves. Just like a kink in a hose disrupts water flow, a subluxation disrupts the flow of vital information and energy through the nervous system. This pressure eventually interferes with the flow of information and energy through the nervous system, leading to a variety of symptoms, including pain, fatigue, and difficulty concentrating.

Subluxations can be painless or cause discomfort and can affect people of all ages. Chiropractic philosophy has always believed that subluxations can be corrected through Spinal Adjustments – gentle, hands-on techniques that are used to restore proper alignment to the spine. When the spine is aligned properly, the pressure on the spinal nerves is relieved, and the nervous system can function properly again.

The unique approach of chiropractic care focuses on enhancing the body’s innate intelligence promoting optimal nerve system function, rather than attempting to treat, cure, or prevent disease. Through the simple physical act of adjusting the spine thus removing mental impulse interferences, I’ve helped people correct subluxations, restore proper alignment, and facilitate the uninterrupted transmission of their mental impulse throughout the nervous system.

Mind-Body Connection

The concept of the Mental Impulse supports an intuitive understanding that our mental state can indeed influence our physical well-being. The mind-body connection refers to the intricate interplay between our thoughts, emotions, and physical health. Countless studies have shown how psychological factors can influence physical well-being, with stress, anxiety, and negative emotions manifesting as physical symptoms or contributing to the development of certain health conditions.

Just as worry and anxiety can lead to stomach ulcers or tension headaches, chiropractic philosophy teaches that negative thoughts and emotional disturbances can contribute to subluxation in the nerve system. When we experience emotional stress in the form of anger, hatred, anxiety, depression, fear, or other negative emotions, our bodies respond by releasing stress chemicals that activate the fight-orflight response. This disruption of life energy flow hinders function because the body can only manifest health with clear transmission of the body’s innate intelligence which coordinates the body’s healthy functioning. Over time, this chronic state of stress from negative thoughts and emotional disturbances can contribute to tension and muscle imbalances, impacting the alignment of our spine and leading to subluxation.

As a chiropractor, I recognize this connection and emphasize the importance of maintaining physical, mental, and emotional balance for optimal health. Therefore, in addition to spinal adjustments, there are a number of other things that you can do to promote a healthy mind-body connection. These include:

Managing stress: Stress is one of the biggest disruptors of the mind-body connection. There are a number of ways to manage stress, including practicing mindfulness meditation, deep breathing exercises, and stress-reduction techniques to manage negative thoughts and promote relaxation.

Emotional Awareness: Cultivating emotional intelligence and self-awareness can help identify and address negative emotions before they become chronic stressors.

Positive Affirmations and Visualization: Engaging in positive self-talk, affirmations, and visualization exercises can help reframe negative thoughts and promote a more positive mental outlook.

Seeking Support: If negative thoughts or emotional disturbances persist, seeking support from a friend, mentor, mental health professional, or counselor can help address underlying issues.
